November 2026 Mid-term elections are coming up soon! I believe as Christians we should go to vote. The following are five concerns I feel, we must keep in mind as to whom we vote for. As a Moravian pastor and bishop, and a former US Army Chaplain who served in Iraq, the following are my considerations.
1. Who supports Israel? The bible declares support of Israel is what assures God’s blessing upon America.
2. Who chooses life over abortion?
3. Avoid socialism and keep demcracy.
4. Who supports veterans who protect America?
5. Keep in mind a prayerful attitude to vote for keeping in mind that all leaders are imperfect.
From the Old Testament, we can learn a little about choosing imperfect leaders. Someone more theologically minded than myself has said that “Old Testament kings give us a framework for how to make tough choices when we don’t love our options”.
From the Old Testament, we find that there is Josiah leader: a righteous person who promotes righteous things. Josiah rediscovered God’s Law and led the nation toward repentance. But Josiah is not always on the ballot.
There are Ahab and Jezebel leaders: unrighteous people who advance wicked things. They led Israel into idolatry, persecuted the prophets, stole from citizens and murdered the innocent.
The Jehu leaders are great ones. The Jehu leaders are deeply flawed people used by God to accomplish good things. Jehu executed judgment on godless leadership but also tolerated idolatry. He was not a Josiah, but he was much better choice than the wicked Ahab.
The following is not my quote and I like it. “We shouldn’t treat a Jehu like a Josiah by pretending imperfections do not exist in a candidate. But when the choice is between an Ahab and a Jehu, between leaders who will advance wickedness and a flawed leader who will do some good, that choice is not actually complicated. A flawed leader used for good purposes is better than suffering under wicked leadership.”
That last statement above is very important to think about and pray about as we prepare to vote. As Christians we must understand character concerning whatever candidate we must vote for. We should be serious to make the best choice we can without looking for a perfect one.
The leaders who govern Alaska and our nation carry real moral weight and responsibility. And we as a people, people of the Church age, have to choose leaders so we have a big responsibility too. Recently, I met a dear elderly person originally who grew up in a communist country in eastern Europe, who has lived in Anchorage a long time. After talking with her, I know that we live in a great nation that regular people like us can vote freely.
Lastly as Christians that try to change the world for Christ, we should vote. GET OUT TO VOTE. Let’s vote to allow God to bring in the best possible leaders for tomorrow.
Someone else said the following, which I like. “Vote the Word. Vote the issues that Scripture speaks to directly. Evaluate candidates through a Biblical lens. And above all, keep your ultimate allegiance where it belongs—not to a party, not to a platform, not to a nation, but to the King of kings who is Lord over all of them”
The photo here is one of my favorite politicians, when I was in the business world, who introduced me to Senator Ted Stevens, Congressman Don Young, and Congressman Frank McKowski , years ago. Joe was a US Marine who was wounded twice in the south Pacific (Guadacanal & Cape Glouster) during World War II fighting the Japanese. Joe McGill, I knew very personally; he was not perfect, far from perfect, but he had full responsibility to do what’s best for the people.
